Solidarity, fraternity and social responsibility: A Lasallian experience begins in the Comfort 2018 Ship.
A group of 12 students of Veterinary Medicine and 2 students of Optometry at Universidad de La Salle, were invited by the US Embassy in Colombia, to participate in one of the most enriching experiences: "Enduring Promise" mission, on board the hospital ship USNS Comfort (T-AH 20), of the Navy of the United States.
The objective of this mission is to provide attention to the most vulnerable communities in two important regions of Colombia, relieving the pressure on medical systems due to the increase of migrants who continually cross their borders.
Our Lasallians are part of the more than 80 professional volunteers, who will provide support to the members of the American medical service in the two phases. The ship arrived first in Turbo, Antioquia, from November 14 to 21 and then will continue to Riohacha, from November 24 to December 1.
The ship's crew includes more than 200 doctors, where will be provided health services such as general surgical intervention, ophthalmological surgical intervention, dermatology, general medical treatment, preventive medicine, dentist treatment, optometry exams, public health and veterinary.
According to information from the Embassy, on each phase of the mission expects to attend "about 750 patients" daily and perform 20 surgeries.
The Lasallian spirit will be reflected during this important event ratifying the social sensibility that characterizes our students, who are trained as the best professionals able to promote the defense of life and integral human development.
We hope that more and more students will join these programs, contributing to the social and productive transformation of our country.
